COLUMBIA, Mo. – Officials at the University of Missouri and Mizzou Alumni Association (MAA) announced today construction of the newest landmark on the MU campus. In honor of MU’s 175th anniversary, the MAA is funding the construction of “Traditions Plaza,” an outdoor amphitheater that will provide an outdoor gathering and programming space for use by MU students, faculty, staff, visitors and alumni. The amphitheater will be located along Conley Avenue on the north side of Carnahan Quad, across from Jesse Hall.

Traditions Plaza will be a location where members of the campus community can enjoy concerts, spirit rallies, outdoor classes and a wide array of other activities. Todd McCubbin, the executive director of the Mizzou Alumni Association says the new outdoor space will improve the campus atmosphere.

“The Alumni Association is excited to build Traditions Plaza during MU’s 175th Anniversary year,” McCubbin said. “We hope the plaza will enhance the beauty of campus while providing a unique programming space. I believe Traditions Plaza will be another example of how alumni help enhance the Mizzou Experience.”

The Traditions Plaza also will provide MU alumni and friends with opportunities to honor Mizzou’s history and heritage. MU traditions such as Tap Day, Tiger Walk, Homecoming and others will be engraved on the bricks and tiles that cover the stage and pillars. Donors will be able to purchase bricks to mark their names in Mizzou history. Net proceeds from brick sales will help fund MU’s cherished traditions, including MAA’s student scholarship program.

“Mizzou is a tradition-rich campus,” McCubbin said. “Traditions Plaza will celebrate current and past traditions that are important to the Mizzou family. We learned through the Tiger Plaza and the Mizzou Legacy Walk projects that alumni and friends love having their name on campus in some form or fashion. Traditions Plaza is the largest project we’ve taken on and will provide many more opportunities for alumni and friends to leave their marks at Mizzou.”

Construction crews will break ground on the project in the summer of 2014, with plans for the project to be completed and dedicated by the fall of 2014.
