Calendar item:  MU Honors Martin Luther King with 40th Year Memorial Service

WHAT:          

The University of Missouri’s Office of Community Relations will host the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 40th Year Memorial Anniversary Service. This two-day event will honor King’s life and legacy, while reflecting on the impact of his work on today’s society.                       

Day one includes the “Kingian Nonviolence Youth Leadership Workshop.” Charles Alphin, former director of education for the King Center in Atlanta, will speak with metropolitan St. Louis youth.                       

The second day of activities is an inclusive ecumenical service honoring King. Rabbi Susan Talve will provide the opening prayer, and keynote speaker Forrest E. Harris will speak on “A Nation with the Soul of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Harris is the president of the American Baptist College of Nashville, director of the Kelly Miller Smith Institute of Black Church Studies and the assistant dean of Vanderbilt University’s church studies.

Enrollment for the workshop is at capacity. The ecumenical service is free and open to the public.  

WHEN & WHERE:         

The “Kingian Nonviolence Youth Leadership Workshop” will occur at Kingdom House in St. Louis.

The ecumenical service will take place at the Washington Tabernacle Baptist Church of St. Louis located at 3200 Washington Ave from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 6.
