MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Hosts Corporate Governance Conference

Top business executives share insights on managing new technology

WHAT: The University of Missouri Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, along with the School of Law and the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources’ Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, is hosting a conference, “Corporate Governance: The Role of the Board of Directors in Understanding and Managing Disruptive and Transformational Technologies.”

More than ever before, with increasing regulation and higher expectations for performance, Boards of Directors are in the spotlight. The Corporate Governance Conference speakers will discuss research and best practices to help participants understand what makes boards effective at managing risks. This conference is for current or potential board members, investors, managers or auditors.

The conference is a part of Mizzou Advantage, a program designed to increase MU’s visibility, stature and impact in higher education. Five dynamic initiatives underlie the competitive assets that set MU apart from other universities. One of those initiatives, “Disruptive and Transformational Technologies,” encourages researchers to explore how current technologies fundamentally change business models and generate new opportunities in today’s rapidly evolving environment.

WHO: Speakers include:

  • Edward Zajac, a leading consultant and the James F. Bere Professor of Management & Organizations at Northwestern University
  • Renee Adams, an internationally acclaimed researcher who previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and is currently a professor of finance at The University of Queensland, Australia
  • James Green, president and CEO of Analogic and former regional vice president for Quest Diagnostics
  • David Haffner, president and CEO of Leggett & Platt, Inc. and a member of the board of directors of Bemis Company
  • Thomas Melzer, co-founder and managing director of RiverVest Venture Partners and former CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

WHEN: 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday, May 20. Presentations include:

  • 9 a.m.  Alternative Realities of Corporate Governance by Edward Zajac
  • 11 a.m. Boards, Regulators and Monkeys by Renee Adams
  • 12:30 p.m. Balancing Risk and Innovation in Today’s Environment by James Green
  • 2 p.m. Board Composition and Communication: Best Practices by David Haffner
  • 4 p.m.  Board Oversight of Venture Capital-Backed Companies: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by Thomas Melzer

NOTE: This event is open to the public, but registration for meals is required by May 17. Conference registration without meals is available on site, but space is limited. There is no fee to attend the presentations. However, participants can attend the lunch for $20 and a networking reception and dinner for $50 at the Donald W. Reynolds Alumni Center.
